Abstract

In PDE-constrained optimization problems other than geophysical full-waveform inversion, full-space optimization methods are commonly used. This type of optimization method updates both the medium parameters and the wavefields, instead of solving wave equations explicitly. In the FWI context, this means the objective function value and gradient can be obtained at very little computational cost. A major obstacle is, however, the requirement to have all wavefields in memory.
